I asked the payroll department of our company should I now declare I am married for the purposes. They said to me that its up to myself.

Both myself and my wife are PAYE workers, do we pay less or more tax if we tell the revenue we are now married?

If you are married and opt for joint assessment, you can transfer tax credits/cut off point between spouses.

The benefit of being married and jointly assessed, is only if one spouses income is lower than the others, or if one spouse is not working, then the person still working can avail of their others unused entitlements.

If both spouses utilise each of their entitlements, there will be no benefit.
