Hello,

I am trying to find out if you import a new car from Northern Ireland, is customs duty liable?

I cannot find an answer to this on www.revenue.ie

I know VAT is liable but is there an additional customs duty charge as well?

Regards.

Would you need to know where the vehicle was actually manufactured for this? Could be different rules depending on whether most of the construction was in the UK or in the EU. So could be different rules depending on model and place of manufacture.

See here for the details on Preferential Origin. Now, I have yet to see a list of cars / models that meet that criteria to avoid customs, and keep in mind that on some UK manufactured/ assembled cars, changes in spec level can mean it comes from a different factory/country.

Did you follow up on this? We're now thinking of a new car (or new to us at any road) and wondering if you got anywhere.

I did. Contacted 2 dealers.

Told me they can only sell a new car if you have a registered address in NI/UK.

Cannot sell a new car to a customer from Republic direct.
