Hi there,
my father in law has asked me to look into his health insurance as it's up for renewal this month.
Himself and his wife are paying almost €4000 per annum on VHI Health Plus Access. They have been with them for years so reluctant to change but eager to get some reduction in premium at the same time.
They are both in their early 70's and in very good general health with no previous conditions to speak of. Dental bills has become an issue in the last year but that's really it, thankfully.
I'd appreciate if you could enlighten me on a good comparable plan, within or outside VHI.
Thank you in advance!

Hi rivtre,

Welcome to AAM. The main positive feature of VHI Health Plus Access plan is full cover for hip or knee replacement surgery in any private or
hi-tech hospital. This type of surgery is the kind that may be required for a person over seventy in the future.
There are 2 alternative VHI plans, at a cheaper price, with full cover for hip and knee replacement surgery. The only slight difference is that
there is an excess to pay if you are admitted to a private or hi-tech hospital for a stay or day case procedure. There is no excess to pay in any
public hospital. This type of plan is suitable especially if they don't have a history of pre-existing conditions which would require maybe several
admissions per year.

Details as follows;
1. Health Access; price 1613pa; all public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered; excess of 125 euro to pay if admitted to a private or hi-tech
hospital for a stay or per day case procedure. Day to day cover is similar to current plan but no routine dental cover on this plan.

2. HealthPlus Excess; price 1734pa; all public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered; excess of 75 to pay if admitted to a private or hi-tech
hospital for a stay or per day case procedure. Day to day cover is similar to current plan but with no routine dental cover on this plan.

There is an alternative VHI plan with better day to day cover, but the compromise is an 80% restriction for hip and knee replacement surgery in
private or hi-tech hospitals. There is no excess to pay on admission or day case procedure. An 80% restriction means a shortfall of 2000+
which is payable by the patient in a private or hi-tech hospital. Note; Blackrock Clinic does not pass this charge onto the patient for this type of
surgery but in other private hospitals the patient would be liable for the shortfall amount.
Details as follows;

3. VHI PMI 38 14; price 1624pa; all public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered, 80% restricted cover applies to a hip or knee replacement surgery in private or hi-tech hospitals. No excess to pay for a private/hi-tech hospital stay or day case procedure. Very good day to day cover on
this plan. 150 refund per consultant visit, 40 per gp, dental etc. Note; for anyone over 65 years, a 6 month wait applies before this day to day cover applies, while waiting they would stay on Healthplus Access day to day cover for the first six months. Hospital cover is similar so no other
waiting applies, except the 80% restriction for hip and knee surgery as explained above.

Alternative option with Laya healthcare as follows;

4. Laya Simply Connect; price 1100pa; all public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered, excess of 150 x 2 max per year for all private + hi-tech
admissions, day case excess 50 per procedure. Good day to day cover, 50% refund subject to a max of 500 per year, no waiting applies for
over 65 years, cover applies straight away. Full cover for hip and knee replacement surgery in all private and hi-tech hospitals on this plan.

They could choose different plans to suit their individual medical needs if necessary.
