Hi,

Just a query about our tax situation.

Myself and my wife are both currently assessed for tax separately. Although my wife has been on maternity leave and has just started Parental leave. She goes back to work in Jan. And then I will go on Parental leave for 6 months.

Is there any benefit to us been assessed jointly for tax purposes. Would we be able to combine or use one another's tax credits to save some money?

Cheers,
D

Hello,

Is it separate assessment??or separate treatment??

Secondly how much will your wife earn and you earn in 2019??? Need this information to provide a answer..

Is there an advantage if you are both working and are both taxed at the higher rate and, barring absolute disaster, you always will?
There's no disadvantage, so it makes no sense whatsoever to forego a joint assessment entitlement that may bring benefits if or when circumstances change.

So regardless of the breakdown of our earnings we should be assessed jointly? The form mentions who the assessable spouse should be....
