so after faffing about with the yucky pine wood everywhere, got a quote to sand back and paint white, there is
12 internal doors, skirting boards for 1300sq ft house and bannisters, the quote is 890, is this reasonable, we are in galway.thanks

good deal. assuming they actually sand it which they prob wont.

FYI i did the same last year but did it myself

well spoke to painter and told him would need to be sanded as they are already varnished and thats the quote including sanding..

yeah - will someone be there during day to supervise cos for that price you couldnt do all the sanding

why do you have doubts, please explain to me, i don;t want to get done here, we have never had any work done on house and so have no experince with all this..

as the doors are varnished , they will have to sand won't they, otherwise the paint will not go on right?

cos sanding that ammount of timber down would take several days and to paint them then properly would take 3 coats - 1 undercoat and 2 normal. they would have to use oil paint for timber and it takes 24 hrs to dry. unless they are doing it for minimum wage or something. by from my experience they wont sand it. when you rub your hand over it after it will be the same as it is now

they said it will take a week, so what price should i be looking at for a proper job?should i exclude this quote as too cheap to be true?

not neccessarily as i didnt sand all my skirting. unless its unreal rough you can get away without sanding the skirting no probs. i would get them in, keep an eye on them, if they start to do the doors without you seeing them give a good sanding, tellt them stop and get out

do you mean sanding back to bare wood, or just sanding enough to get a good grip for the pian with reference to sanding the doors

What they should be doing is keying the surface which basically means giving all the wood work a quick rub with some fine sand paper.

It is important that every last area is keyed otherwise it is very possible your paint won't stick to the varnish.

It might be fine in a year but sooner or later it will start to flake off.

I would have a door sanded and cleaned down then painted in about in about 3 hours.

Prep then 2nd coat would be about 1 hour.

If everything is fine then the last coat would take 30 mins.

And that's just the doors

Wondering how this paint job went for you?

We want to do the same thing - paint previously varnished doors and skirting - seems too big and messy a job to do myself if it needs sanding, priming AND a few coats of paint !!!
We're in Galway too -
Did you go for the 890 quote and are you happy with the outcome ?
