I intend to paint my 2 bed apartment and am considering what colours to use. It's a smallish place and I was therefore advised to use white or cream as this creates the illusion of more space! Is this rubbish?! The apartment is white already and I had been thinking of something much different e.g. light blue etc. Thanks

Lighter colours indeed give the illusion of more space. Dark colours tend to close in a space.

Keep it light if you think all white is too stark try different shades of white eg Jasmine white and some creams it does make rooms look bigger

I personally don't believe that about dark colours making a room look smaller. You can quite well paint a room a dark colour and use pictures, mirrors and furniture placement to make it seem bigger.

When she was a kid my sister insisted on having her bedroom (the boxroom, v small) painted a very strong green colour. All the adults thought she was mad but indulged her. Years later my mother repainted it a paler pastel green and everybody commented on how the room actually looked smaller with the paler colour.

So if you really like a colour then you should go for it. The great thing about painting is that you can very easily paint over it :)
