P21-Underpaid tax

Hi All,

Just got P21's for 2011 and 2012 and they both say i underpaid by a total amount of apx €1000.
(Linked to tax on my rental property, so no dispute with it)

Just wondering though, it says my tax credits in 2014 will be adjusted to pay the amount owed. TBH i'd rather just pay the lump sum, is this possible?

In 2012 i sent a cheque in with my Form 12 which was for the rental income tax owed and they sent it back to me so it's kind of annoying now that it's for the same amount as i had worked out and tried to pay at the time.

Is there any other options of making payment of is adjusting my 2014 tax credits the only way?

Thanks

As far as I know, the Revenue love to receive cheques.

I'm surprised theyr eturned a cheque.

An accountant will know more than me, but maube simply write them a letter with a cheque for the 2011 and 2012 amount?

Surely they should accept that, and then NOT adjust the tax credits?

I always send in a cheque with my Form 12 and it's always been accepted. Try emailing them about it - they're very quick to respond.

Yes will do, cheers.
It is strange because my understanding was that sending a cheque was what i was supposed to do, and it was for the same amount that they are telling me i now owe for that year.
There was some queries made on my receipts for that year so maybe they didn't want to cash it with that still in the air at the time.

sorry i have another query on my P21 regarding tax
(tried calling revenue but waiting time is too long than i can wait during working hours)

On my P21 i have been taxed on JSB. Is this correct?
I was put on short time from my full time 5 day position to a 3 day week for a "temporary" relief to the business expenses.
I was under the belief that once it was a temporary arrangement that this income was not taxable, now i'm finding out i owe revenue the guts of €1000...

Systematic short-time workers aren't taxable on their JSB - however the calculation of benefit is then different, by reference to a 5-day week rather than a 6-day week, so you may well find that in resolving the tax issue, you have been overpaid JSB... (i.e. you should have been getting 2/5 of the rate, but may have been getting 3/6...).

Although Job-seekers benefit is non-taxable for short-time working when your working week has been cut, Revenue will tax based on how the Social Welfare have described the payment.
Revenue won't re-classify the payment themselves. I don't know if you'd get anywhere with the welfare office?

ahh...what a mindfield!

Where did the Social Welfare get their classification from? Like if me and my employer have a greed to a temporary change in my working conditions/contract then i would have thought Social have to take this as "temporary" and therefore not liable for tax?

Can you tell me where i might find out what the rates are for 2/5 and 3/6 days so that i can check which i have been receiving, i can't see how i'd have been overpaid seeing how i fill in my form every week selecting the days i worked and days i didn't out of a 7day slip!

If i should be getting the 2/5 payment does that mean i could work at weekends at still claim my JSB? Pretty sure that is not the case, but they can't have it both ways...can they?

I think you may need to call to your local SW office to clarify which category you were classified under. ie Part time JSB or systematic short time payment. The first is taxable, the second is not.
