overpayment on mortgage

Hi, is it better if you have a lump sum to pay it all off the amount you borrowed for your mortgage in one go or is it better to overpay an extra amount each month thus reducing it by degrees? We had a discussion on this the other evening with one person saying one thing and one the other???????????

Bank of Ireland have a calculator that tells you what you would save if you paid a lump sum or periodically. Well it tells you what youd save in interest with a lump sum and how many repayments you advoid if you paid periodically
