Overpaid tax - What should I do?

I did a return to the Revenue a couple of years ago everything done and dusted but when checking it last week, I noticed I made a mistake on my extra income and I've now paid them too much tax!
Should I
(A) Say it to them even though it's 3 years ago and try and get it back?
(B) Reduce this years income by the amount I over paid?
(C) Forget it as they may do an audit because I made an incorrect return?
Amount is around 3,000 ish.

Re: What should I do?

I'd be inclined to go for (A) but I would check with my accountant first.

I assumed that you were self employed for no good reason.

What sort of tax did you overpay? If it was income tax then requesting a P21 balancing statement for the relevant year should rectify the overpayment.

Just write to Revenue with a copy of your P60 (and any other information that may be relevant) asking them to do a P21 balancing statement for the year. If they have all relevant info then you should get a refund if you overpaid tax.
