Options to help make balcony more private?

Our apartment has a large balcony with has railings on two sides looking on to open space but our fourth side is a metal screen type thing that separates our balcony from our neighbours'. Until this year we had small trees/bushes against this which gave us privacy but they have died away and our balcony now seems very exposed. Other than bamboo screens or new trees, is there any alternative that would give us some privacy? We were outside tonight for a barbecue and next door were out too and it really felt like there was nothing between us.
 
Well you said the old way worked, so get some new shrubs. Look after them properly this time, so they don't die. :)
 
The problem with the shrubs was the wind. We're on a corner and it was difficult to keep the soil in the pots.
 
Use material from a potato sack or something and use an elastic band so you can easily get to water them.
 
You could always put up the bamboo screens and the plants. Looks better from your side but still allows for privacy.
