Son is Irish and holds US citizenship.
His wife has started divorce proceedings. They both live in the USA.
Surviving Parent of son being divorced is Irish and has lived exclusively in Ireland and all assets are located in Ireland.

How can his inheritance be protected from any claims his divorcing spouse might make now or later post divorce settlement .?

Perhaps a trust could shelter it. The estate would need to be quite valuable to make it worth your while.

A speedy and thorough divorce, closed out before you pop your clogs could also protect as once the divorce is finalized any assets gained thereafter are not marital assets as I understand it.

Write up the final divorce settlement to be watertight. Good luck.

Would she not be very entitled to a claim on the inheretence?

Thinking along lines of future earnings and pensions.

We're speculating wildly here regarding his legal position in another country. Not good. He needs to get advice from his US lawyer. It might or might not be the case that the US court takes his potential inheritance into account. He (and you) need to get a clear view on that and plan accordingly.
