Offsetting Capital Losses on Irish Bank Shares

I have made a capital loss on the disposal of BOI shares.

I understand that I can offset this against future potential capital gains on other shares for an indefinite period going forward, but are their other options?

I am reluctant to invest in individual irish / foreign shares again, having been stung already.

I looked at ETFs, but I understand that these cannot be offset against individual share capital losses? Are their any other polled share / investment options I can look at ? Gartmore Irish Growth Fund? Certain classes of ETF??

Thanks in advance for help

No, losses on shares can only be offset against gains on similar asset types -ie other shares

Hi jpd

Not quite correct. You can set the losses off against any gains subject to CGT. It does not have to be shares.

So if you sell a property or work of art and make a gain, you can set the loss against that.

Thank you both for your replies

So if you can offset the share lcapital loss against capital gains on art / property, why can't you offset it against a gain on an ETF etc?
