Hello all,A friend of mine,a self employed taxi driver owes 6000.00 euro to revenue. He said the deadline is for october and he will be lucky to come up with 2000.00 euro.My question is ,How strict are revenue with people who are making an effort to be compliant. My friend knows full well he has to pay every cent owed and he will.He understands penalties are involved but are they automatic even if you approach them with a plan to pay the balance at a later date.If anyone has had a similiar experience your advice would be appreciated.Thank you.

Your friend should approach Revenue with a plan. Tell them he will be in a position to pay 2000 in October and tell them what he proposes to pay and when. Revenue have been saying for some time that they will go easy on people who let them know they are in trouble.

Bear in mind that I assume the October 6,000 is the balance for 2009 which is due by 31/10/10. October is also the due date for 2010 Preliminary Tax. What provisions will he be able to make for that? Woes he have any idea as to what it might be? Revenue will expect, in any arrangement, that all current taxes be kept up to date as they fall due.
