O2 making things awkward for potential customers?

I decided to treat myself to an iPhone this weekend. I went into 3 shops on Grafton street at 3 pm, and all said not to bother, as O2 have brought in new credit checks that were taking ages, and are skeleton staffed on saturdays and barely functioning on sundays. I rang shops today (Monday), and again, it cannot be done on the same day.
I understand they have been hit by fraud with new accounts but making it more difficult for genuine potential customers to join must surely be making these losses worse!
 
Wait until June, there's a new iPhone coming out then. Otherwise you'll be locked into an 18 month contract on this version.
 
Are they still ridiculously overpriced?
(I went for an iTouch with truphone and kept my existing phone for where there's no wifi access)
