NPPR Charges

Hi all

I have a NPPR bill that I cannot afford to pay. I started renting out my house about 3 years ago as I had to move abroad to find work. I dont receive enough rent to cover the mortgage so I have to make that up plus big management fees. I only found out about the NPPR charge last year and by then I already had a bunch of fines accumulated for non payment so I rather stupidly ignored it. Now I received a letter from the Dept seeking payment of the arrears and I really do not know what to do?

I would say your priority should be to stop the arrears building up. €20 per month can soon add up.

Contact the relevant council and see if they will agree to freeze the arrears and let you pay the outstanding amount over a suitable period of time.

As this is a relatively new charge, they may be open to coming to an arrangement as no precedents have been set.

Thanks for that. The 20 euro each month does indeed add up and personally I think it is a charge too far for the relevant council to be making. The 20 euro in fines actually brings it over the cost of the charge itself which as you can imagine over a 3 year period adds up. I do not mind paying for services, in fact I positively believe that we should, but it irks me somewhat to be forking out close to a grand for management fees as well as paying a new charge which from what I can see does nothing for my estate but rather subsidises older estates. Sorry for the rant!

Anyway I will try get in touch with them and see if a longer repayments schedule could be worked out. I doubt the Council will be in the mood for any talk of debt forgiveness on this one
