A NEW YORK grand jury has voted to indict former US president Donald Trump over hush money payments made ahead of the 2016 election... They did not say whether they intended to seek prison time in the event of a conviction, a development that would not prevent Trump from seeking and assuming the presidency.

No former or sitting US president has been charged with a crime before.

The Democrats (Good Guys) are playing a very canny game and it is working. People are talking about the witch hunt of The Donald backfiring. Yes, in the sense that His chances of being the GOP nominee have considerably improved - now 56% chance according to Betfair. But so too have the chances of the Good Guys winning the next election which are now 50%, when it looked a lost cause some months ago.
The paradox is also revealed by Betfair where on examining the various markets we can deduce that if The Donald is the GOP nominee the Good Guys are 57% likely to win whereas if anybody else is the GOP nominee the Good Guys have only a 41% chance of winning.

Now if only they can get rid of their VP and make Sleepy Joe 15 years younger...
 
Though I think Betfair may be missing a distinct possibility. If The Donald does not win the GOP nomination then it will surely be because the process was rigged - what then the chances of The Donald running as the Real Republican? Democrats home and hosed in that 3 horse race.

That is a very cynical game. If Trump's supporters come to believe that he has been martyred by Democrats using the legal system, that will poison US politics for a long time.

There is no "come" about it. Trump supporters are irredeemable; they actually believe he won in 2020. What would be damaging is if the undecideds who swung it for Biden in 2020 get turned off.
 
Trump hasn't gone away alas and is now in full wannabee dictator mode.

The GOP presidential front-runner has talked about targeting his rivals — referring to them as “vermin” — and vowed to seek retribution if he wins a second term for what he argues are politically motivated prosecutions against him. As Trump has dominated the Republican presidential primary, President Joe Biden has stepped up his own warnings, contending Trump is “ determined to destroy American democracy.”
