notice without a contract

Hi

I have read other threads, but i just want to clarify if I am correct. I have been in a job for 4 years. I never signed or received a contract (bad I know!) Is 2 weeks the notice I am required to give? I did want a reference from them, so I was saying always to myself I would give 4 weeks notice but in another sense no contract - and don't want to be a mug anymore - is 2 weeks very bad and would it kill my reference. just trying to weigh stuff up here,

Any advice appreciated

Thanks

You do have a contract, just no written terms and conditions. Generally in this case you give one pay period as notice. If you are paid monthly, give a month's notice.

Mugsgame is correct, but even if you are paid weekly, 4 weeks notice is the accepted norm, even if you have no legal obligation to give it. After working there for 4 years, it would be a shame to leave on bad terms and perhaps scupper your chance of a glowing reference.
