Notice Period - to work or not

Hi All

been in a new role for under 3 months and have decided its not for me.

I am looking for a new role, but since it is not worth mentioning, this job won't be going on my c.v. - hence I wont need a ref either.

Boss is not in today - so I thinking of handing in my notice right now, would be nice to leave the letter on her desk and disapear into the night. (wife had a baby recently so wouyld be good to spend some time at home whilst looking for new job and also a good excuse)

Any ramifications?
Would you do it?

What are the financial consequences if you can't find work immediately? Remember SW will not pay you for a certain period if yyou leve a job without "just cause".
 
I think you should do the polite/decent thing and turn up tomorrow and hand in your notice in person, talk to your mgr and see if they will let you go early since you are only there 3 months. In the long run even if you are not looking for a reference its a small world out there, best to leave on good terms. Your mgr will be decent about it if you are decent to him/her. Perhaps request parental leave if they dont let you go, it will be unpaid but then again if you just leave overnight you wont get paid either.
 
First 6 months is a probationary period, which I thought notice would be only 1 week but its actually 4 weeks.

Not expecting any SW payments, happy that can cover the period of non payment - its my choice to leave after all, plus I am assuming/hoping it will only be for a few months.

I'd strongly agree with this. Don't just walk out!

This country's too small to do stuff like that. I'm changing job at the moment, and can't believe the number of people I know from previous jobs in the two places I'm considering (and that I hadn't known were there). You just never know what'll happen in the future in terms of people you'll meet again.

Walking out at the very least will cause some degree of inconvenience. All it takes is a ten minute chat to say you'd like to leave and to agree the best time to do it.
