Non salt water softner??

Could anyone tell me if there is such a thing as a non-salt water softner?? I live in the midlands and have a lot of lime in the water..... the problem is I already have a salt system and a member of my family suffers from exazma which is really agravated by the salt!! This causes alot of pain and skin redness. Has anyone got any ideas on how to go about changing this??
Any ideas welcome, desprate at this stage..

Dont now much about them but they use no salt. Something like this may be available here in ireland.

I got a quote for installation of a water softener recently and the one being supplied is non-salt so they are available here. The softener itself costs about 700 euro, plus installation.
