No Sound in my web browser

Would appreciate any help with a problem that has cropped up two days ago.
I can't get any sound in my web browsers - Internet Explorer or Firefox. The sound works in every other instance, i.e,. in Media Player, DVD player, Winamp etc. but there is no sound in videos on Youtube, BBC, RTE etc. Have checked that the volume is turned up on all the players and visited all the help centers to no avail.

  1. In Internet Explorer 7, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. Scroll down to Multimedia, go to Settings, and clear any of the following check boxes to turn on/off that type of multimedia:
    Play animations in webpages
    Play sounds in webpages
    Show pictures
There's probably a similar option in Firefox.

Thanks for your help Miselemeas. We tried that and many other things, but still no sound in either Internet Explorer or Firefox. We are now using Safari and the sound is working fine in that.
