Hi,
We had new timber front doors installed last month. They did a good job and all was great until recently when the doors started sticking and its difficut to open and close them without banging thm shut. When the weather is fine they're fine. We have an external porch door so why would the weather effect them as it does? Any tips or solutions appreciated.

Many thanks

You will just have to get your Carpenter back to take 3 or 4mm of the door. - this is normal.

Are they hardwood or softwood and have they being painted/ stained yet?

They are Mahogany doors. We have varnished them with 2 coat so far but it was recommended to apply 5 coats which I will do this weekend. Could this be the answer? I sound so lazy but its just getting the time...

Thank you for you reply NHG and you too Mr. Tayto

sometimes the age of the wood can cause this.if the doors were made from young wood and in cold or wet weather it causes the doors to swell.
try rubbing some candle wax on that area.varnishing has nothing to do with it.you should really call the company that fitted the doors.the longer you leave it the worse it may become.

Mahoganny doors should'nt swell, when painting/varnishing them everyone forgets the top and bottom of the door should be sealed as well, everyone only does what they can see. Ring the company that fitted them.

shouldnt but do_One note on the color of the door to think about. Since your door seems to see a lot of sun, make sure and go with a lighter stain color. The darker colors absorb more heat and cause swelling and movement of the door.

Bear in mind the exceptional rainfall and resultant moisture content in the air over the last few months. This has caused swelling even in my internal doors of 20 years age at least! Im sure they will (mine anyway) reduce to size to fit when I turn on the heating and evaporate some of the residual moisture they have collected. Be wary of overdoing it - you cannot add it back on!
