Hi,

We are looking for a new matress. We want the best quality we can find - comfy yet good for the back etc - can anyone make any recommendations on brands or what to look for etc?

Re: New Matress

We are also looking for a good quality matress. Bought one last year, went in and out of shop a few times to test it out but after buying and sleeping on it for two nights I got a dreadful attack of sciatica (luckily I had held on to the old one) so matress was given to family. I'm still with the old one because I'm afraid the same will happen again.

Re: New Matress

Tread carefully...for example mattress sizes in IKEA are different to "standard" sizes so you could end up with a mattress that doesn't fit your existing bed. My own view is that you should spend as much as you can afford, given you will spend a fair portion of your life on the mattress. I'd recommend Arnotts.

There are many previous threads on beds and mattersses.

An expert on beds on the radio recommended 'pocket spring with memory foam top' some time ago.

If you have a look at http://www.furniture.ie/ you might get some advice there.

Arnotts are very helpful also.

have memory foam mattress cost around €1700 best money ever spent shop around for best price some gangsters out there

Just bought a new bed (mattress and base) 2 weeks ago, have had some back problems so researched what I wanted.

Found some recommendations online from Irish orthopediac (or chiropractic) association (cant remember which but found the recommendations on rte website I think.).

Two recommended (both Irish) were Respa Backcare and the Respa Visco Bonnell 350 or 700.

Went to Des Kellys to lie on them. The Respa Backcare was cheapest, followed by VB 350, followed by VB 700.

Ended up buying the VB 700 - mattress alone was over 800 euro.

Got it home delivered at the weekend and I am not joking, its the best nights sleep I ever had. Its got a memory foam topper and its a medium firm mattress.

I feel like Im floating above it rather than being in it - if I lie on it on my back I can feel the support along my whole spine.

Have only been sleeping on it since the weekend and my back feels great - I was stuck on a futon mattress for the 2 weeks before it came and my back was in bits from it.

I have no affilation to any company mentioned above, just a happy customer.

Spend as much as you can afford - a good mattress is vital.

Edited to say - in total I spent just over 1000 euro - I just got a standard base, but got drawers put into it which pushed up the price a bit, and a headboard as well - but Des kellys were willing to do a bit of discounting so think I ended up with ~ 150 euro off.
