New job - want holiday beforehand

Here’s my situation that im sure a lot of you have been in before.

Basically I got a call today from the public appointments service saying that they will probably be offering me a position in the next couple of weeks.

I have to give a months notice in my current job but don’t want to give my notice until I get a concrete offer from the public appointments service, for obvious reasons.

But I need to take a well deserved break before going from one job to another (my current job is really stressfull and I haven’t had a proper holiday in quite a while), basically I want to go do a bit of traveling for about 3 weeks.

How likely is it that my new employer will approve of giving me 7-8 weeks (incl. notice period) form offer of employment to starting the new job? I really need to take a bit of time off, I’m even thinking of making up a story to ensure I get the time off (ie say I have to finish a contract or say I have to give 2 months notice in my current job or something like that).

Bearing in mind this will be a civil service job at EO level, what do yis reckon??

Re: New job - want holiday beforehand!!

when the pas call tell them you've holidays booked and won't be able to start until X. I would doubt very much that they'd look for proof and they won't be able to skip past you to the next candidate.

Re: New job - want holiday beforehand!!

A friend of mine recently got a job (HSE) a few months ago and he told them that he had holidays booked for the first month from when he was supposed to start and they had no problem with it.

I'm sure you'll be fine. lots of people have to give 2 or 3 months notice in work anyway so its not uncommon.

Yep i have about 8 or 9 days left. Dont think they would be impressed though if i gave my nboitce and said oh by the way im only working 2 and half weeks notice and the rest is my holiday days!

Ok so it should be cool, happy days fingers crossed!

im in the same situation: Its a civil service EO job and they are being really pushy and want me to start asap, like in a few weeks, they say there really short and need me to go in right away.I want to work my notice and take a weeks holidays but they dont like the sound of that they want me in asap. Dam why cant things just be straight forward, i dont know what to do now!
