Hi,

I need to get a new engine for my car (well new to me). I've tried around Ireland and I can't seemt o get one, so it looks like I'll be importing one from the UK.

A lot of the sellers over there use the term "re-manufacturered", what questions should I be asking them before I buy.

I really don't have a clue about cars to ne honest.

Thanks,

if you let us know what make and model it was you were looking for someone here might be able to get one closer to home or perhaps you have asked already

Remanufactured should mean rebuilt.

Rebore, new piston rings, gaskets, seals, etc. A good one is almost exactly as good as a new engine.

Ask about the reman. processes. What's done and by whom. Reputation is everything.

If you're buying from an engine reconditioner ask if they are member of F.E.R. They are a body which oversee the members of its organisation. They always offer a good warranty. Is your own engine beyond repair? There are some very good engine specialists in Ireland who might be able to sort it for you.

Hi thanks for the replies,

Ya I am told my own engine is shagged, been told by 3 different garages, including the main dealer.

I am looking for a engine for 2000 Audi A6 1.8 turbo petrol- the engine code is APU.

I know it is a pure guzzler, but that's for a different day.

Thanks again,
Browser.

Just a thought, if remanufactured means it is as good as new (or nearly) then it seems OK to be. It would prob cost about €2,000 to get it over from England - which while I would much rather not pay doesn;'t seem to bad. Or is that just me being naive in thinking that the engine is the most important part of the car and therefore should be a large percentage of the cost? The cost of a new engine was roughly quoted to me as €6-7k

you'd be off your head to pay 6-7k for an engine in a 7 year old car
what you want is an average mileage one from a breakers that has been rear-ended or side swiped. ideally if you could see it in situ to hear it running and verfiy the mileage. i think passats were also available with this engine.
i would say about 1000 +5-600 for fitting.
try traynors in dungannon as they are quite big and deliver all over the country.

...also try Quiggs (Newtownards) Co. Antrim - they specialise in VW - Audi only... and import on a weekly basis from England.
Dont have the number handy but try Directory enquireries ! - they also advertise Auto Trader.

I think delivery can be organised

That engine could be clapped out too.
