Network where do I start & Wireless sharing

Have Desktop upstairs and a Laptop downstairs

Using Wireless at the moment. Desktop has Wireless adapter and the Laptop has one buit in

Can the wireless signal be used on both PCs ? So if I am downloading a large file using the Desktop but want to use the Laptop for viewing net etc can this be done and if so how ?

Also where do I start if I want to set up a network. So what I want to do is to be able to access files on the Desktop PC from my Laptop

Yes.

Just configure both machines with the required wireless connection details and let them both connect to the wireless router and thereby share internet access. Usually Windows will find the wireless LAN automatically and you may just have to enter security details (e.g. WEP or WPA encryption keys/passphrases).
