Neither gas heating nor immersion working

just looking for some general info as to what the problem may be prior to forking out for a plumber....switched on the emersion today for an hour and no hot water, water tank never heated up. So I decided to switch on the heating to see if that would warm up the water and again, the tank stayed cold in the hot press.
Now the heating was last used about 3 months ago and all worked ok. Use the electric shower so had'nt switched on the emersion in months.

What could have gone wrong in the past 3 months to stop the water from heating?

Suspect you have two seperate unrelated issues. THe controls for both are independant.
Is the neon light coming on in your emmersion switch? If you are not familiar with Electrics I suggest you call an Electrician to investigate further. It may be something as simple as your swith blown as you didn't mention any trips going.

there's no light switch which goes on when the emersion is turned on, just a flick of a switch. The heating light comes on when I switch the gas on and it sounds like it's working as normal but none of the rads are heating up.
it can't be a coincidence that both are'nt working- that neither of them are heating the water in the hot tank

There is a valve located by your tank that controls your hot water coil on your gas. If left alone for a while it may stick. It is easy to free up. It is spring loaded and should free up when you play around with it.
As regards a connection with your emmersion I'd have to see your system but to date i HAVE BNEVER SEEN A SYSTEM WHERE THEY ARE CONNECTED.
IT does not sound like your emmersion is gone however as this usually results in your trip going. I would start by seeing have you power leaving and entering your switch.

Have you checked the fuse on the fuse board that services the immersion? And have you a switch on the boiler time clock for hot water?
