Neighbour Fixing Truck and running engine up to 2am

We have had new neighbours move into rented accommodation across the road this week. There has been a Toyota Dyna loaded up with scrap washing machines/ cookers etc parked outside the house with the past 3 days.
Last night the resident decided that 1.30am would be a suitable time to go out and start up the engine for half an hour and mess with the truck.
Is this in contravention of any legislation?

Might be worth having a word, to try to ensure it doesn't become an ongoing problem.

You post like a snob Mel.

They are new neighbours, you said so yourself.

Give them a chance - they are probably going through it like most people.

Engage with them, preferably with a witness present and the Gardaí on standby.

Thats a very unfair comment ONQ. I wouldn't like that jeep full of used machines outside my house.

OP could you call the council and ask them for their advise. If they are running a business from the home they miight be in trouble

Can tell you one thing, if I'd neighbors who were so inconsiderate as to assume the world revolves around them an they can do what the wish regardless of the inconvenience to others, I would not be happy, and I would probably not approach them directly either.

Report it to the Garda, disturbance of the peace. You may find the like of the van is not exactly tax or DOE compliant.

Report it to the Council or Litter Warden. Any person transporting or storing waste for commercial purposes must have a waste permit and license.

Hands off approach.
 


Negative remarks based on "rented accommodation" and "not the type of people I want to have any sort of interactions with" marks the OP out has having pre-judged the people involved without even having met them.
That's what I understand by the term "snob" and that's not acceptable at any time in my book and definitely not in the middle of a recession, where people's problems tend to multiply.
But let's not throw Gucci handbags at dawn, dahlink - there was a far better way to deal with the matter, killing two birds with one stone.

I wouldn't have waited until the next day to call the police, and if there was any bother, I'd say I thought someone was trying to steal their truck and that I was trying to do them a good turn.
You're covered in case they try and get back at you by being the good samaritan who tried to prevent their truck getting stolen.
This way they are let know the neighbours won't stand for any of their nonsense PLUS the Gardaí are aware of them early on.

So that's a win-win situation - simple, innit?

But don't let's forget that there are a lot of people hurting out there at the moment, financially, emotionally.
They may have been forced into selling their house at a loss and been obliged to start renting.
This leads to bad tempers in the home, rows, possible marital breakdown.
Let's cut these people some slack and try not to be so judgemental.
If they're bad eggs, that'll come out soon enough.

Go over to them and tell them your concerns.Stay calm.See what the reaction is.Se if this person is reasonable or unreasonable.The first contact and their attitude to your concern will tell you a lot.After this you will know what you're dealing with.Good luck Mel.

I absolutely agree. Let this one pass and if it happens again then approach the relevant authorities.
 
Very unfair to label Mel a snob because she does not want a scruffy Truck laden with scrap starting at all hours of the day and night.

Times are tough on everyone at the minute, still would not be making excuses for rude behaviour though.

I am working hard to pay my mortgage and if I looked across the road to see Steptoe and Son had moved in across the road complete with dodgy washing machines, cookers etc, that would drive me to drink!
 
As far as I know there is no law against running an engine of a vehicle parked on the public road at any time of the night or day, as long as the vehicle is taxed and insured.

Otherwise how could delivery vehicles, taxis and early risers/late arrivers enter and leave the area legally.

Running it in the driveway however could cause a significant health hazard, because of the build up of toxic fumes nearly sleeping accommodation.

However just as the Gardaí can do nothing against people whose alarms go off when they are away on weekends, and cannot stop the occasional all-night parties, I doubt they can stop yer maun running his truck.

Agree with complainer on this one.....definitely let them know once is once too many, or you could be on the back foot and it will be harder to complain the second time.

We all have our crosses to bear and I am sure they can accept that there are other ways of anger management therapy that do not involve sleep depravation for the neighbours.

Do you have the landlords number? Perhaps he might have a word.
 
I haven't read half the comments above but I get the gist - ONQ, get a grip. Rented accommodation is perfectly relevant to my complaint - I assume that the landlord's permission is required to run a business, scrap or otherwise, from a rented property. But no, I won't be having any words quiet or otherwise with them, as quite honestly, I would be afraid. You may take that as you wish, but I can assure you, I'm not a snob, it's FAR from designer handbags and dahlinks in my house or indeed on my street. This however is a step too far - there is uproar on the whole street that this family have been allowed to move in, people are losing sleep over it and not just because of the bloody truck running. They are literally afraid for their families.
The landlord has been accosted in public, as have members of his family.

My observation however is a valid complaint, and not one that's based on preconceptions. I can add that the owner of said truck thought it appropriate to unload it at 11.30pm last night, and has reloaded it at some point today. Social hours indeed.

I will follow the advice given above and call the police and the council and indeed the landlord.

... and the PRTB as the landlord is responsible for tenant's anti-social behaviour (if that's what's happening). Also ring the Revenue and inform them that a scrap business is running from the house and ask them to check for VAT, tax, etc. Give the address and the reg of the lorry.

I totally sympatise with you. We had similiar carry-on on our street ie welding trailers up to 1am, parties etc, my neighbour approached them and all was quiet for only a few days. Now, if anything happens, I quietly lift the phone and call the Gardai, end of. Until the next time......

Chin up, they will eventually get the message that this sort of behaviour is simply unacceptable in any neighbourhood, day or night.

And ONQ, this has nothing to do with snobbery or the like, it is simply called having respect for people living around you, which these people obviously don't have.
