Moving to US to pay tax on stock options

Hi,

I have a number of stock options both vested and unvested through my current employer. I currently have the option to move to the US for a role within the same company. Considering the amount of tax I have to pay on shares in Ireland it's something I'm considering.

Would anyone happen to know how long you have to live in the US before getting taxed there on your stock options? I think it's 3 years but can't find anything online to clarify it.

thanks

Keep me honest here but I'm pretty sure that any options that vested in Ireland are still taxable in Ireland if/when you exercise.

This is not a simple area and I'd suggest going through IT 72 on the Revenue website http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/leaflets/index.html which should put you in the area. You also have potential double taxation issues involving primary and secondary taxing rights.

This is a specialist area and one in which a lot of tax specialists aren't familiar with.

This is the bible for queries such as yours:

Revenue's 2007 Statement of Practice for share based remuneration with international aspects.

The answer should be in there.

I totally agree with Mr Gekko - I attached the link to the incorrect Revenue document.
