Moving to Switzerland

I am currently employed in Ireland but considering a permanent job offer in Bern (Switzerland). I am an Irish citizen and have paid PAYE all my working life here. I would be getting a local contract there and not expat status. Would I qualify for a PAYE tax refund? Any other tax issues to consider?

Thanks in advance for your help

As you are leaving Ireland part way through the year you may well be due a refund of PAYE. Provided you are non resident in 2011 you will be entitled to slit year relief in respect of your employment income in 2010 i.e. only your employment income up to the date of your departure will be taxable in Ireland. As you are still entitled to a full years tax credits and standard rate band it may result in a PAYE refund. If you register for the Revenue PAYE online system you will be able to request a balancing statement for the year as well as claim any other tax reliefs that you may be entitled to e.g. unreimbursed medical expenses, service charges etc.

If you have other sources of income you will also need to determine the correct tax treatment of that income while abroad. For example if you are renting out a house in Ireland it will always be subject to Irish tax. There are also other rules that apply for Non Resident Landlords. If you are receiving tax relief at source ("trs") on your mortgage it will be necessary to notify the bank that you will no longer be living in the property and you will cease to get the TRS. You won't have the €200 NPPR for 2010 but will have it for 2011 if still abroad and renting out a property.
