hi,

i seem to have a reoccuring problem with damp on the ceiling in one of the bedrooms,
as i wipe it,it seems to come back again.i know i need to get to the source of the problem in order to prevent this from appearing again after it has been wiped away, but can anyone tell me what to look out for when i get up into the attic.
would the gutters not being cleaned have any bearing on this problem.
the roof of the house is a hip roof and it is quite hard for me to get right to the edge of the attic as the roof gets quite narrow as you move further through the attic.
thanks

Aidan,

Rather than a problem in the attic - it could well be warm moist air rising from the kitchen/bathroom and if not sufficient ventilation in place during the cold weather - then the moist air will look for the coldest spot which could well be that ceiling spot.
Is the mouldy spot just above one of the windows in the bedroom?

hi,

the black stains are only across the ceiling at the back of the house, from time to time i get the odd black dot on the ceiling on the bathroom ceiling, whic can be easily wiped as the ceiling is pvc.
any ideas what it might be
thanks

We had that problem, turned out the builders had neglected to roll out the insulation in the attic directly above.

aidan...

mould is caused by a build up of moisture on a material.
If there i sno pipes etc leaking at these points then it most probably is due to condensation.

condensation is cause by one or both of two factors... 1. inadequate ventilation or 2. inadequate insulation.

do the rooms have a vent.. either in the wall or in the window frame (trickle vent)??

is there adequate insulation in the attic space... you should aim at 200mm quilt at minimum... 300mm optimum....
