Hi,
I am about to trade in my 01 focus for either a 04 Mondeo 2LTDCI or an 03/04 Avensis D4D, however i don't know which would be more economical in running terms and also in servicing terms etc..
i will be doing a lot of travelling so my 1.4 focus petrol would not be too easy to run...

Also looking at the passat/Octavia etc

any suggestions?

Cheers
Alan

The Mondeo Zetec TDCI is a lovely car.

Some later 04's even have a 6 speed gearbox. Punchy power, smooth and with excellent road holding. Budget for about 45mpg on longer runs. These cars are relatively good value lightly used.

A pal of mine bought an 04 with 10k miles recorded. He's very happy with it.

p.s. I'm sure the Avensis is good too. Maybe not as good to drive, but has solid residual values. The Passat 130bhp engine is a cracker - very lively.

I've a Mondeo and my father has an Avensis. I swear by the Mondeo and he swears by the Avensis.

In fact, he's standing beside me now and he says, 'it's economical, a joy to drive and very comfortable. AND very presentable. Better looking than the Mondeo.'

I find the Mondeo more 'solid', a better drive and the ergonomics are a bit better. The Avensis is a bit 'lighter' and the interior layout can be confusing (to me anyway). I'm due a new car next year and I'd probably get another Mondeo (in a different colour, of course) or a Saab/Volvo.

Thanks Guys

Whats the difference in a Mondeo TDi LX and a Mondeo TDCI Zetec

Cheers
Alan

The TDCI is the common rail more power and better fuel economy.

Can't be too bad.

A relatively slow, unrefined, and poorly equipped Mondeo.

Don't buy it.

A TDCI Zetec is what you really want. Same engine as is in the X Type Jag.

Will cost more but is well worth it.

My pleasure.

Just go and buy it and suprise your wife - hatchback is better if you can find one - and doesn't command any premium in the used market over the saloon, even though it costs more new.

Buy a light coloured metallic. Easiest to keep clean and most looked for when you eventually sell on.

The very late 2004 models and all the new ones have a 6 speed gearbox btw.

As a driver's car the Mondeo is the choice!

As an investment the Toyota wins - no contest!

Have driven both the LX & Zetec Mondeo, must say I couldn't see the difference in engine performance.

Hatchbacks are much more flexible if you can get one.

Can't say I've experienced much difference in relibility between a Mondeo or Avensis. Passat's now that's another story!!!

2nd hand Mondeo is a sound buy. The initially depreciate quicker than the Toyota but then level off.

Definately a Mondeo. I drive one here that is very scarce in Ireland - 2.0TDCI Ghia X. Very comfortable, excellent handling. For the 130ps I get easily 50+ to the gallon.

Go for the 115PS min though now they have a new 2.2 TDCI 155PS on the markey. Supposed to be a weapon.
