Mobile Phones Allowed on Ryanair Planes

Not sure if Travel related if not then mods please move

Heard on morning Ireland this morning that from July Ryanair are going to allow passengers to use Mobile Phones on the plane
on selected routes

Not sure if its going to be similar to the US and use 'their phone' rather than your own

Only going to be on selected routes did not give out full details

I detest mobile phones in enclosed spaces and God knows what I will do if a passenger is yapping beside me on a flight

Bad enough with their bright yellow seats now I have to endure this :mad:
 
I'm sure they will not be providing this service without profiting themselves. I also dread the thought of sitting in front or beside people on phones. I will stock up on wax ear-plugs which are fantastic for blocking out noise while being comfortable to wear, I always use them on long haul to try and sleep but think they may become a must on all flights soon!
 
I listened to the MorningIreland report. The service will only be available on 7 Ryanair aircraft out of a fleet of almost 200. The technology will allow passengers to make and receive calls on their own mobile phones. I heard on previous reports that the cost will be approx. €3 per min. That should put a few off.
 
I read €4 per minute. You would need to use their system, probably with your own handset. I don't think too many economy passengers will avail of this service.

So what? Do you expect them to provide it for free or at a loss? Do you think that their shareholders would put up with that?

Nobody will use their phone on a plane. I've often been on longhaul business class flights where there are skyphones available at every seat and I've never seen anybody use one.

There is too much background noise on a plane to have a conversation with the person beside you so I doubt there is any point in using a phone.

Maybe there will be the odd call here and there but it will rarely be a nuisance.
 

Not saying I'd expect anything for nothing but rather said in the hope that the cost of calls will put people off making constant calls. I hope if and when it does come in the charges are high. I am not a Ryanair basher, I'm just not keen on the use of mobile phones everywhere.
 
I was under the impression that it was dangerous to activate a mobile phone during flight - something to do with the phone's transmitter interfering with the on-board computer?

Even if you make a call through Ryanair's own network, your mobile will still be doing the same thing it does on the ground.

Do you also believe that when you crash, sorry - "land on water" - you can summon help by blowing your lifejacket whistle?

... maybe they should replace the whistle with a waterproof mobile phone...
