Gendered titles such as “The Kerryman” newspaper should be changed to reflect present values, according to the Minister of State for Inclusion.

Josepha Madigan has suggested that the newspaper title be changed to “The Kerry People”.

Speaking to RTÉ radio’s Today with Claire Byrne show, the Minister defended her call for an end to gendered titles such as “chairman” and “spokesman”.

Ms Madigan said the issue was not about a particular newspaper but was much broader. Gender and language were important, and it was important not to use words that did not reflect present values.

If it doesn't matter, let's change the name to "The Kerrywoman". Serious question, what impact would that have on circulation?

In any event, whether Kerryman or woman - neither are great titles. What would better capture the target audience would be something like: "For those people that make it possible for characters like the Healy-Raes to get elected time and again."
 
I was going to say the date today might give a clue about the authenticity of this story. But then I saw the article is actually from March 18th! Mother of God, give me strength as Hastings might say.

Diddly squat I'd say! I prefer Kerrys Eye myself for a read but if either of them turned up in the morning with just blank space in the name it would hardly matter at this stage they are so long established. I doubt many younger people buy either physical paper at this stage, Kerrys Eye might have the edge there, and for the online presence name hardly matters either.

Every Kerryman joke ever would have to be changed but I suppose these are non PC too at this stage!

I saw the story back then and checked the date on my calendar. I actually thought it was a spoof. So I thought it would be a great story for 1 April!

Given that The Cork Examiner tried to broaden its appeal by rebranding itself "The Examiner", perhaps The Kerryman should rebrand itself "The Man"?

Anyway, I'm sure that The Skibbereen Eagle is keeping a beady eye on the minister now...

i think that it’s now called the Eagle to widen its appeal.
 
And the Examiner changed it's name to the Irish Examiner shortly after the first name change.

The Western People would seem to be streets ahead of their Munster counterparts as far as inclusivity is concerned.
 
Nice to see some humour from the Burgessmeister . Keep it up! Now, who wants to change the name of the metal cover outside on our road . . it used to be called a manhole cover. Suggestions??
 
Maybe the Financial Ombudsman should consider a name change to the Financial Ombudsperson.
