Question, does an employer have to pay a mileage allowance. Up until recently i was being paid 99c per mile but unfortunately they have now decided to slash this and pay me a standard fee to a certain place and back. What are my statutory entitlements if any?

The nice people from Revenue told us that if we paid more than €0.35 per Km they'd consider it a benefit in kind. Be happy you got €0.99 cent a mile for so long!

I wonder does this mean that our MPs pay BIK on all their mileage and overnight rates? If not it seems very unfair!

I get 78c per KM and don't pay any BIK ... should I be worried that revenue will be knocking on my door ... ?

It depends on your annual business mileage total. The rate decreases sharply once you cross a certain number of miles. See IT51 & IT54 on revenue.ie or google these.
