Memory Upgrade

I have an old P3 with a 56k modem and was wonderning if I doubled the RAM to 128MB, would this offer an improvement in internet speed. It downloads at roughly 1kB/sec. Other machines on the same line usually achieve 3/4kB/sec. Are there any other factors which would influence the download speed?

Thanks
Jim

A memory upgrade could improve matters since 64MB is generally a bit tight these days regardless of internet connectivity. However you should check out some other issues first.

For example check that there are no viruses/parasites etc. that might be adversely affecting internet throughput:

Assuming that your modem is a software/WinModem which implements some/most of its functionality in software rather than hardware then you should make sure that you have the latest drivers for your modem (or its chipset) and that it is properly configured. This site might be of interest:

Other things to check are that the phone connection and extension lead etc. are OK although if other PCs work OK then these should be all right.

download speed

Are you sure you are only getting 1kb/sec?

Seems incredibly low for dial-up.

Get Eircom to check the line.

VitalAgent is a useful tool for measuring actual throughput and diagnosing betwork problems:
