Medium- to high-end graphics cards

Hi all,

It looks like I will need to upgrade my video card if I want to be able to edit and review AVCHD content properly on my PC. I accept that playing back and editing AVCHD content is heavy on the resources because of the level of detail and the compression ratio used. I can't remember the card I currently have, but replay stutters while watching in Nero, fails entirely after about 3 or 4 seconds in Pinnacle and seems to play OK in HDWriter. Since I can't do a whole lot using HDWriter I need to get a card that will allow me to work better in the other tools. The CPU in the machine when bought about 10 months ago was towards the top end of the range and it has 4g of memory.

According to the Pinnacle website I need "256 MB ATI Radeon 9600 or NVidia GeForce 6 or higher should work as expected." and this is where my problems start . . . trying to work out what 'or higher' means.

I had a look around and found this cards - but I can't tell easily whether it is better or worse than a Radeon 9600 - all I know is that it isn't a 9600.

Also, I found this much more expensive one which appears to be the same card from what I can tell, except that the box is different -

Can anyone advise whether the one from Circuit City looks like a good deal and most importantly whether it meets the definition of 'higher than a 9600' ? I had a look here at the tomshardware guide - - and it looks to be about half way up the list of cards, but some of the reviews I have seen indicate it's not a great card.

Thanks,

aircobra - this is true. I have asked on some video sites, but thought I would drop it into AAM and see what the resident gurus come up with. It's always worth a shot.
