Medical Expenses - tax paid

My partner submitted over 4,500 in medical expenses re 2012 but she had been on maternity leave and she didnt pay sufficient tax to receive the full 20% benefit. We didnt realise at the time that you can only claim what you have paid. As she only received half of what was potentially due, can I submit a claim using some of the same expenses now to make up the balance. My argument is that we wouldnt be receiving any more than had been initially claimed. Any thoughts?

Not quite answering your question ... but in a way ....

I am very sure that Medical Relief on expenses is available for anyone who incurs eligible expenditure on behalf of themselves and dependents e.g. if my better half goes to the doctor and gets prescriptions but I pay, then I am entitled to the relief.

(Having said the above, don't claim what you're not entitled to - be prepared to back it up; Revenue often look for medical expenses receipts before paying out. You should also be aware that relief has been claimed in respect of some of these receipts - even if not granted so some form of communication with the Revenue would be necessary in my opinion so as they wouldn't think you guys are double-claiming)
