Medical Card entitlement - both unemployed, paid lump sum off mortgage

Hi - myself and husband are now both unemployed :( We had a large amount in savings, but an even larger mortgage. We are in the process of moving a lump sum from savings off of our mortgage. Our savings would then be well within the limit of the 72,000 disregard for the medical card.

We are both receiving maxiumum job seekers benefit of about 230euro per week each . This seems to bring us over the weekly limit for a family with 2 children, but should we be entitled if our sole income is social welfare, as our savings should be disregarded?

Find this all confusing as struggling with doctor bills, prescription costs. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Also - is it at the social welfare office that I would apply, or just mail a form into the HSE?

You can download the form from the HSE website - get your GP to fill it out and back it up with all information on medication and gp visits over the past few months.

It's means tested so your adjusted mortgage will be taken into account along with your household bills and number of children. You should consider waiting on applying until you get a statement of what your new mortgage payments will be and make sure you can show that your savings went directly off the mortgage.

Thanks so much for the info - Any idea if I will need to bring along bank statements and such like to show savings? If so, how far back?

I should be able to get details from the mortgage provider but might take a number of days for payment to go through and to receive paperwork.

If you receive a mortgage payment subsidy from Social Welfare is this based on your monthly repayment or is it a set amount for everyone?
The reason I ask this is because when you make a lump sum repayment off your mortgage you have two choices. To reduce the term of the loan but your monthly repayment remains the same or to leave the term of the loan the same but you reduce your monthly repayment.

in our case, we haven't looked for any assistance with mortgage repayments as yet. We decided to keep the term the same for now and reduce our monthly payment for now. in the past I have paid a lump sum off and also reduced the term down, keeping repayments the same, but right now want to ensure we can meet monthly outgoings til the job market picks up.
not sure how the mortgage assistance works, we might look into this in a number of weeks when our new repayments come into place

Mortgage interest supplement is based on the interest portion of your repayment, calculated either from the monthly repayment or from the capital balance and interest rate. The amount paid varies, depending on the circumstances of the mortgage, the household income, and any savings you may have.
