I didn't work for 5 out of 12 months last year.

We have high medical bills which I want to claim back for under Med 1.

My friend has said claiming back under my name probably wont' work as I didn't pay enough tax in 2011 to claim back. She said I can put my husband's name down on the claim form and he will be claiming for me as his spouse.

Can someone confirm this is ok to do? I claimed the year before but I was working all year that year.

thanks

M

Are you jointly assessed? If so I would imagine it doesnt matter who's name is used? But I stand to be corrected :)

Might be worth considering claiming under husbands number and joint assessment as he may get an increased standard rate band thats available.

Hi Jo

sorry I don't understand, i've been working again since October last year so am working full time again now. Does it make any difference to be jointly assessed as opposed to assessed individually?

Basically, it was fertility treatment we had and we spent all our savings on it, so even though I paid for it all through my credit card, it was our money as such. So am hoping for the Med 1 it won't be a problem putting him down first and then him claiming for me as his spouse...

Not sure if I'm making myself clear?

Depending on your income, if both earn over €32,800 thats fine but if either is under that then the other can take the difference and get a refund of PAYE paid.

Thanks for the advice Joe. I rang the revenue today and we're going to fill in the IT2 form and send that into them at the same time as submitting the Med1 form which the guy said was fine to put my husband's name in and claim for me.

I'm not sure though where it says on Page 2, Name of Employer or Pension Provider, for me, who do I put in there, which employer? I worked for three different places last year. Anyone know? Also how do I know how much tax I paid, it's very confusing...

thanks

I dont know what to do about more than one employer, but you know what tax you paid from your P60 from each employer.

If you kept your last pay packet from each job, it should have the total PAYE paid for the year on it.

Thanks Huskerdu. I was thinking of contacting Revenue and getting a P21, balancing statement and using that?

Revenue won't have your pay and tax details for 2011 for ages yet - employers don't even have to submit them until 15th February and it takes a good while after that to get them all up on Revenue's systems.

When you get your P60s for last year send them all in together with your husband's and your IT2 and Med1 and then they will be able to produce a P21 and issue refund.
