Hi,

I am looking for advice in relation to the MBS in Project Management course in Smurfit.

Have you completed this course?
Is it value for money?
Does it create good opportunities?

Is there a better alternative?

I am looking into the part-time course as currently in full-time employment.

Thanks,

Jason.

Hi Jason...I'm not familiar with the course...however do you already work in Project Management? I would have thought that a lot of companies are looking for experience in PM rather than qualifications...just my own experience...

Hi Lauren,

Not formally working in PM, however have a lot of PM work as part of my job in engineering.

Thanks.

Hi Jason,
I'd also look at the MSc in Project Management in Smurfit too, from what I remember at the time it seemed much more hands on. It obviously depends on what your focus is in doing the course but I'm working as a project manager myself and it seems that having the PM certifications especially PMI or Prince 2 are what people are looking for more than formal degrees in PM - I'd focus more on them than the IPMA as nobody seems to be looking for that at the moment if you search the job sites. None of that takes away from the fact that obviously experience is the ultimate decider!! I decided against doing a masters in project management and instead did the 6month evening course in DBS which is basically a prep for the PMI exam and it's definitely helped, plus it's a hell of a lot cheaper than doing a masters!!

Try projectmanagement.ie for a list of courses.
Personnally, i think if you got the experience of 2-3 years and then went and did the course you might make better use of it!

The PMP qualification from PMI is very well respected - probably offers better bang for your buck unless you are planning a career in pure Project Management.
