Hi

Currently building a garage and my opening for the garage door is 2750mm (9 feet). Can i use a premade lintel here or will i have to cast one myself?

Thanks

Please see attached websites for your information....usually its advisable to get an engineer to assess which type to use depending on the vertical loads to be supported by the lintel.

The lintel may require additional support at the bearing ends as well...your engineer will advise you. Alternatively you can cast concrete over a precast lintel....againg your engineer will advise you...

I used an RSJ for my garage .. double doors pillar between doors ....

I used a number of RSJ's in my build and paid a couple of hundre euro .... cheap for my job ... I also put in a loft so load of floor was taken on RSJs.

I did have a gap to fill above roller door and RSJ's but that was easily solved with casting my own concrete in fill ... I reinforced it with a length of angle iron (at each door opening) that was bolted on either sider of door .... concrete cast solidified the whole thing. There was no stress/weight on them as the rsj's carried loft, upper walls and roof.

Yes RSJ's are fine so long as you do not have to pick up an outer leaf. It depends on the detail required.

I have a 10ft wide garage opening with pre-made lintels - Some good precast companies make these. You can double up on the no of lintels for strength
