Maternity Benefit - Medical required?

I'm due to go off on maternity leave in 6 weeks and just got my acknowledgement from the department of Social Welfare. Also enclosed was a leaflet saying that as I was applying for an illness or disablility benefit I would need to be assessed by a medical and an appointment would be made for me which i would be informed of shortly.

Is this normal? Its maternity benefit, not illness. Definitely did not happen on my last maternity leave.

My doctor filled in and signed the section of the form required.

I've looked at the information leaflet and the form here and nothing about medical assessment. Was the acknowledgement from the Maternity Section?

It was from maternity section - Just phoned them. They say they send the acknowledgement form to Dublin who in turn post it on to the applicant - and they cannot understand why this leaflet was put in with my form. Going to do nothing unless I hear again from them.
