Master in English- where do you go from there?

Hi all,
I recently completed a Masters in English. Although, I really enjoyed it at the time and got good grades, I am now wondering if it was a waste of time and effort. I don't know where to go from here career-wise. I am working in a temporary job, I don't really know what I want to do long-term (although I know that I don't want to stay where I am!)
Has anyone else been in the same boat?

Personally, I don't think that any education is a waste of time, particularly if you really enjoyed it.

It may not enhance your career prospects outside academia but I agree with WaterSprite that education is never a waste of time.
You may have to consider getting a more career orientated qualification but with a primary degree this should not be a problem (as long as you can eat while you are doing it).

Jellybelly, when you say English is it general English or literature or language/linguistics?

Thanks for the replies. Caveat, it was Literature and theory based. Purple, I have considered that but I don't know what to do. I don't want to do another degree, and, although I would love to go back, it's very expensive to do another MA. Plus, I don't know what I'd do... Most likely I’d have to do a conversion course of some description if I wanted to get a desirable qualification but I hate the thought of studying something I’m not at all interested in, say, accountancy, just so I can have a specific career path.

What about a career in the Academic world. Lecturing pays pretty well I believe

It can, but it involves another 3-4 years phd, which I don't think I'm cut out for. What did all you people study?

Why did you do it originally?
Did you have a plan in mind then?

What about law? Trainee business analyst? Teaching in secondary school (H Dip)?

What temporary work are you doing? Does the organisation interest you?

Doing a PhD or another Masters is not going to get your cv looking marketable. You are lucky that you have youth on your side so spend some quality time working out what you want to do in a work context and direct your efforts towards getting there.

There is a lot of work going on in the public sector around [broken link removed]. Any way that you can tap into this?
