We returned to Ireland last year and hadn't worked here before we were married. I'm on PAYE higher rate tax and my partner is a self employed trader making virtually nothing, we've just had the married tax credit applied to me so my allowances show as 3660 for both of us and 1876 for my PAYE. Some people have told us however that we should be able to get my partners personal allowance transfered to me and get a balancing statement for last year so I get credited for her allowances. Phoning Revenue is getting me nowhere nor is emailing.. is it worth my getting an accountant or tax advisor to look at it for us ?

What other people are telling you is half right and half wrong.

Of course you can apply for a balancing statement for 2009 - just send your P60 to tax office and request a P21 , and include both your PPS No and your wifes PPS No.

Your allowances of 3660 and 1830 are correct - remember your wife is only entitled to the PAYE allowance if she is a PAYE employee .

In order to claim maximum allowances and credits , it may be advisable to look at an accountant or tax advisor , - its your call .

If your partner was self employed in 2009 she will have to file a tax return so that will balance your affairs in due course. As you have returned to Ireland in 2009 you may have been resident in 2 countries during the year which will complicate things.
For 2010 as the previous poster said the Married Cr is 3660 and the PAYE Cr is 1830 that is the max you can be allocated as your wife is not entitled to the PAYE Cr as she is not in PAYE employment.

Thanks both that's helpful. Think well sort the2009 return and take from there. At least I know the allowances are right.

just read this thread and noted the point about the 1830 paye allowance. my wife is on jobseekers benifit and i am the assessable spouse but revenue in their wisdom have given me 3660 in paye allowance and 3660 in tax credits for myself?(1830 plus 1830) should i be worried that its wrong. i queried it but they said its right. my wife has no credits as she does not work now they said.

Jong 74 Yes this is correct as she has income (Jobseekers Benefit) which is subject to PAYE.

Are your tax credits and SRCOP reduced by the amount of her benefit. If so check that the amount of reduction matches the amount she actually received - less 13 euros per week

yes blacksheep income reduced by 16euro just checked it and her jobseekers benifit is taken into account on my tax . tax credits reduced by dsfa jobseekers benifit 1903.20euro. thanks for that.

Oh joy - got my payslip today to discover my tax credits have changed :( I'm now a Week1 Month 1 as a single person ?, which my payroll dept tells me means there's a question about my tax affairs  but only Revenue can tell me what. So I try to call and guess what ? Lines are closed due to industrial action. I've emailed now so will wait and see, in meantime , reduced takehome pay for me today...

Gosh.. does this mean that if my spouse gave up running at a loss, trying to get trade and declared as a jobseeker ? we'd be better off tax wise ? didn't plan to go down that route as we can live on my salary ..
