Makeover for house facade

In planning an extension five years ago, we focussed almost exclusively on the interior with insufficient thought to the exterior look we were creating.

Whilst we're very satisfied with how things worked out inside, the exterior facade looks quite "boxey" and uninteresting.

Anyone any ideas on how we might give it a makeover (without knocking walls). I'm conscious that some amendments might need planning permission but would be prepared to go this route if necessary.

Grateful for any thoughts.

Without seeing your house it is difficult to offer suggestions. However, what I think you mean is that the house is missing a focal point and perhaps lacks interest from the outside. My house is a bit the same after building a side extension.
Would you consider some kind of door canopy? eg. [broken link removed]
or something similar to match the age and style of your house.
You could try upgrading your front garden adding features such as potted bay trees etc. at the entrance - or maybe growing a climber up the front. These are cheap ways of adding a bit of character, dont know if thats what you mean though.

Hi Ophelia

Tks for the reply.

Yes, I was thinking along the line of the canopy, perhaps stradling the hall door and the adjacent room window. The supports might be an issue though if they were secured to the driveway.

Was thinking of cladding as well perhaps between the ground and first floor windows but haven't seen any really good examples of its use.

new age stone "cladding" in galway

have this "stone" surrounding my solid fuel range. done in a long evening, clean and tidy and very good quality for price paid.

I know someone had a picture of their exterior house up here when i was looking for info on the stone. doing a search will give u ideas.
