Greetings,

I decided to post on this forum because I'm a little worried about my carrier and salary.

Next week will be one year since I started working for this company as a programmer. Our company is using databases and internal website to manage business process, order management, accounting and production control. What's important that I'm the only programmer at the company and I develop all applications. I spend many weekends working at home as well. My boss is more like business analyst and consultant, he usually talks to users, and documents the system. My boss reports to company owner.

The reason I'm worried about my salary is because I earn $13,000-$15,000 less than an average salary in that field. I also feel that no one will start annual salary review until I ask for it.

I'm afraid to ask for such big raise but also think that with the amount of work I'm doing I should be paid at least an average, not below it.

What's very important is that I love my job and working atmosphere.

I'm also not sure If I should talk with my boss or company owner directly?

Can someone point help me to make the right decision? How long should I wait before asking about raise myself?

Thanks!

Hi Null - Askaboutmoney.com is an Irish bulletin board, so most responses that you get will relate to Irish scenarios. However, I guess answers from all over the world may well be valuable to your particular situation.

If you don't ask, you don't get. If you are at least 9 months in that job, I would see nothing unusual about you presenting a case for a salary increase, including evidence of average salaries elsewhere.

Hi Null
Agus faillte,

Rainyday is right. If you Dont ask you dont get. Youre making money for someone alone the way and therefore you should reap some fruits of your labour.

A friend always says "if you dont ask, you dont want".

Ask your boss first, then owner if youve no joy.

Personally I think this depends on the company ethos. There are many companies that will never increase pay by such a leap unless recruiting a new employee- ie they will force you to change jobs in order to up your salary. I've heard of, but have no personal experience of, companies that actually value their employees and actively try to keep them by raising their salaries without the threat of losing them or trying to seduce a new comer.
