I have just finished a four month contact in the UK, however I was still resident in Ireland and worked from home for much of the contract. I phoned up the UK tax office and they told me to fill in a "Leaving the UK" form to get tax back. I never actually resided in the UK so it doesn't really seem to fit the bill. I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and how they went about claiming tax back?
From Feb 09 until Aug 09 I had to spend 4 days in every two weeks in the UK. Am self employed in Ireland but the firm put me on their books temporarily while over there. What you don't want is two mouths at one cherry.
If you are non-UK resident for a tax year, you are still liable to UK tax on employments exercised in the UK. However, as you may be due your full tax free allowance for the year in the UK as an EU resident, if you complete a UK tax return form you may get some UK tax refunded depending on the figures involved.
As an Irish resident (and presumably Irish domicile), you will be taxable in full in Ireland on your UK earnings, but will get a credit in Ireland for the UK tax paid (net of the UK refund and subject to certain restrictions).
