Help urgently needed.

My son signed up to Limewire without my knowledge a couple of days ago on his laptop.

Now when we open iTunes on any of our computers there is a new heading on the left-hand column called SHARED with a sub-heading "Main's Limewire Tunes" with the same twenty tunes in it.

My main worry is that one computer is our work computer which has all our company's accounts, salaries and a lot more that I would not want exposed.

Can anyone suggest how this happened?

Anything to do with the fact that we have a Wifi router?

Perhaps your son has been on more than one computer.

Why is iTunes on your work computer? Disconnect it from the web when the web isn't needed.

There should be a hardware firewall on the router and software one on the computers using WiFi.

Hello,

He must have installed Limewire as far as I can tell.

If you go to Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->Add or Remove Programs look around the list of programs and see if you casn find Limewire and remove it from your pc. (Most probably his laptop) - Although I don't know how it spread to different computers?

A similar story here. I have Limewire on my desktop computer at home and when I bought a laptop recently and started up iTunes on it there was Limewire and a shared library from my desktop - without me having put Limewire on the laptop.

It is a strange one, it seems like if there's a wireless connection in the house Limewire will make itself at home on any computer. I haven't investigated yet but I'm hoping there's a setting that will disable this. It's annoying that the default setting makes it do this, but, well, it is Limewire.

yeah i have seen this too, i have lime wire and itunes,, when on wireless netwoks my lome wire will be displayed on some one else itunes,, you can set the limewire not to share files

Thanks to all for your responses. I told my son to remove it but we think it isn't completely gone, so he is going to format his laptop over the weekend, to be sure.

I now realise that it didn't actually spread to the other computers. The other computers just appeared to have access - to see and play the files he downloaded, but only while his computer was on. I realise now that this was to do with settings.

I wonder if there was any real danger to my other computers?

I'm not too sure, but if he ran LimeWire on his pc, he could have been sharing files and folders on other pcs too as long as these pcs were swithed on and had the network active.

I think you are safe but always better to assume the worst in a situation like this where bank/credit card/salary details are involved.

tell your son to be very careful of what files are shared while on any peer2peer network such as LW.

In honesty I would never use a program like that on any computer that has important files on it, even if i was sure they were not shared, it's just too dangerous.
