We've just completed our self build. We have a pressurised water system. We've noticied when the water pump kicks in when you run a tap/shower etc that the power supply to lights etc seems to dipp and they 'blink' for a split second.

Have told the electrician and he say's not alot can be done about it.

Is there any way of stopping this happening?

Upgrade the supply the the house, change the pump to one with a soft start motor (if such a pump exists) etc. It may be how the pump is wired, but if you are out in the sticks, chances are the supply cant handle the startup current.

the supply is a 16Kva, which is the higher supply ESB provide if using a pump. Don't know if the pump uses soft start, will check this.

thanks

I would assume that the pump is single phase as it is a domestic house. There is a soft start for a 3 phase motor to prevent surges when they first kick in but not sure if available for single phase motors. The same will occur when you run a pumped shower as to get the motor turning you will draw more current from the supply and when it is up and running the current will drop back to normal full load current resulting in the light shining at full capacity again..Its not anything dangerous but more annoying. I would suggest an internet search to see if some type af anti surge device can be fitted to your supply
