We're leaving our house for a couple of weeks this winter and want to know if anyone has any tips specifically re. pipes freezing and plumbing.

IE Should we turn off the mains. What should we do with pipes and attic tank etc?
Thanks mulchy

Welcome to AAM

First things first if you are leaving it for over 30 days then your insurance co might have an issue with the cover and their might be certain things you need to do to ensure you are still covered by them.

If it is literally for a couple of weeks I don't think there is very much to do assuming your pipes in the attic etc are insulated. Perhaps I'm off the mark but it takes a very deep freeze for pipes to burst due to freezing.

first of all, empty your attic water tank and tie up the ball cock to stop it filling again.

Check all taps are closed.

If you can get a digital thermostat to control your heating and set the "Holiday" mode on it for the duration you are away, and then set the frost setting, you will have heating on the day you return and it will prevent the house getting too cold. Otherwise just set your stat for about 6deg C
